Things to Do in Ha Giang Beyond the Loop

Six young travelers sit smiling on chairs at a mountain viewpoint overlooking green valleys in Ha Giang.

Most lists of things to do in Ha Giang are really lists of stops on the loop. This one is not. The loop gets its own guides on this site. This page covers what else the province holds. The valleys west of the main road, the markets, the caves, the terraces, and the village stays that riders pass without noticing.

Some links below are affiliate links. If you book through one we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. How this site makes money.

The things to do in Ha Giang below split into two kinds. Some fit into a loop trip with one extra day. Others need their own two or three days. Each entry below says which.

Heaven’s Gate Ha Giang: the first viewpoint north

The first climb out of Ha Giang City ends at Quan Ba Heaven’s Gate, about 45 km north. The Heaven’s Gate Ha Giang riders meet on day one is this one, not the pass of the same name above Sapa. A short walk from the pass reaches a viewpoint over the Quan Ba valley. Below it sit two rounded hills, the ones the Vietnamese call the Fairy Twin Mountains.

It takes an hour, it sits directly on the route, and the view explains the geology of everything that follows. Go early. Cloud fills the valley until mid-morning in winter.

Lung Khuy cave

Above Quan Ba town, a steep side road climbs to Lung Khuy cave. Inside is a lit boardwalk through chambers of stalactites. The walk in gives you the valley from a different angle.

It is one of the few things to do in Ha Giang that gets you off a bike for an hour. The detour is short. Bring a light layer, because the cave is cold.

Quan Ba is the first viewpoint on the way north, and the one most riders pass in a hurry.

Nam Dam, and staying in a Dao village

Nam Dam sits in the Quan Ba valley, a few kilometres off the main road. It is a Dao community that runs its own homestays. Expect rammed-earth houses, herbal baths and short walks into the hills behind.

One night here changes the shape of a loop trip. Instead of a dorm in a town, you get a valley, a family kitchen and a morning walk. It works as the first or the last night of a four-day route. The Ha Giang Loop itinerary guide absorbs it without much rearranging.

Hoang Su Phi rice terraces

This is the biggest thing to do in Ha Giang that the loop misses entirely. Hoang Su Phi lies roughly 80 km west of Ha Giang City, in the opposite direction from the karst plateau.

The terraces here are the deepest in the north, cut into steep hillsides by Dao and Nung farmers. The classic bases are Ban Luoc, Ban Phung, Thong Nguyen and Nam Ty. Trekking between villages is the point here, not driving to a viewpoint.

Timing is narrow. The gold comes in late September to early October, and the water season reflects the sky in May and June. Outside those windows the hillsides are green and far less dramatic.

Budget two to three days. It does not combine well with a three-day loop. Trying to do both in one week is how people end up seeing neither properly.

Khau Vai love market, once a year

Khau Vai is a commune in Meo Vac district. On one day a year it holds the strangest market in the north. The tradition, dated locally to 1919, brings former lovers together for a night of meeting rather than trading.

The date is fixed to the lunar calendar. It falls on the 27th day of the third lunar month, and the gathering starts the evening before. In 2021 the customs around the market were listed as national intangible cultural heritage.

Go with a translator or a guide, and go with respect. It is a local event that tourism visits, not a show put on for visitors.

Markets: the best things to do in Ha Giang for early risers

Markets are the best things to do in Ha Giang for anyone who wants the province rather than the road. Most run early, and most are finished by mid-morning.

  • Meo Vac, Sunday. Livestock, textiles and food, and the biggest of the eastern markets.
  • Quan Ba and Yen Minh, smaller and less visited, on a rotating local schedule.
  • Village markets near Du Gia and Sung La, which appear and vanish within a morning.

Dong Van’s own Sunday market and old quarter are left out here. They are covered in the Dong Van guide.

Ask your homestay which market falls on which morning during your stay. Schedules shift, and a market you catch by luck is better than one you plan for and miss.

Du Gia waterfall

Du Gia sits on the quiet eastern side of the loop. The waterfall a short ride from the village is why many riders stay an extra night. There is a pool deep enough to swim in. It is busiest in the hour before sunset.

Two hours covers it. Go in the morning if you want it to yourself.

Ha Giang City itself

Nobody comes for the city, and that is fine. It is a base, not a destination. Still, the night bus drops you with a morning to fill. There is a river walk and a decent local market. The coffee shops are used to riders killing time before a tour briefing.

Use the morning to collect your border permit and confirm your bag storage. Then check your gear against the Ha Giang Loop packing list.

Fitting these things to do in Ha Giang around the loop

Most of these work with one extra day. Two of them do not work at all on a tight schedule. Day trips that bundle several of them are listed on Klook.

  • One extra day: Nam Dam, Lung Khuy, Du Gia waterfall and a market morning.
  • Fixed date only: Khau Vai, which pulls your whole trip to one weekend in spring.
  • Separate trip: Hoang Su Phi, which is a different direction and a different pace.

Things to do in Ha Giang FAQ

What is there to do in Ha Giang without a motorbike?

More than people assume. Markets, Hoang Su Phi trekking, village homestays and a jeep tour of the loop all work without riding.

What to do in Ha Giang if I only have one spare day?

Take the Quan Ba side: Heaven’s Gate, Lung Khuy cave and a night in Nam Dam. All three sit close to the main road north.

When is the Khau Vai love market?

On the 27th day of the third lunar month, which falls in spring. Check the date against the lunar calendar before you book anything around it.

What do most visitors miss?

Hoang Su Phi and the smaller markets. Both need time that a standard three-day trip does not have.

Is Hoang Su Phi worth adding to a loop trip?

Only if you have two spare days and come in harvest season. Otherwise save it for a separate trip.
