The Ha Giang Loop Itinerary: 3, 4 and 5-Day Routes

A Ha Giang Loop itinerary is really a decision about what you are willing to skip. The route is fixed. The number of nights is not.
Three days is what most operators sell. Four days is the version worth booking. Five days is for people who want the plateau rather than the road.
Below is each Ha Giang Loop itinerary day by day, with honest timings and the specific thing each version gives up.

Which Ha Giang Loop itinerary fits the time you have
| Version | Nights on the loop | Riding per day | What it costs you |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 days | 2 | 110–140km | Du Gia becomes a lunch stop. Lung Cu is usually cut. |
| 4 days | 3 | 80–100km | One more night and one more bus fare. |
| 5 days | 4 | 60–80km | Two half days of riding. Some people find it slow. |
The Ha Giang Loop route itself does not change. All three versions run Ha Giang City, Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van, Ma Pi Leng, Meo Vac, Du Gia and back. The full leg-by-leg breakdown is in the Ha Giang Loop map.
What changes is how much of each day you spend on the bike rather than off it. That is the whole decision.
The 3 day Ha Giang Loop itinerary
This is the package most riders book, and it works. It is also the version that turns the last day into a march.
Day 1: Ha Giang City to Yen Minh or Dong Van
Start around 8.30am after the paperwork and the bike briefing. Quan Ba Heaven Gate by 10am, lunch in Yen Minh, and the plateau in the afternoon.
Groups that push through to Dong Van arrive around 5pm. Groups that stop in Yen Minh arrive by 3pm and gain a slow evening.
Stopping in Dong Van is the better call. It puts Ma Pi Leng first thing on day two, in the best light of the trip.
Day 2: Dong Van, Ma Pi Leng, Meo Vac and on to Du Gia
The big day. Ma Pi Leng in the morning, the Nho Que boat around midday, then 65km of the roughest road on the loop.
Realistic timing: pass by 9am, boat at 11am, Meo Vac lunch at 1pm, Du Gia by 5.30pm. Skip the boat and you gain ninety minutes.
This day is why the three-day version is tiring. It stacks the best scenery and the worst surfaces into the same eight hours.
Day 3: Du Gia to Ha Giang City
Seventy kilometres, two and a half to three hours, back in town by early afternoon. Time for the waterfall at Du Gia first if you leave by 8am.
Most groups eat, shower at the hostel and take the 3pm or the evening bus south.
The 4 day Ha Giang Loop itinerary
The four-day version does one thing: it splits the monster second day in two. Everything else is the same route at a human pace.
| Day | Route | Riding | Night |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ha Giang City → Quan Ba → Yen Minh | ~100km | Yen Minh |
| 2 | Yen Minh → Lung Cu → Dong Van | ~85km | Dong Van |
| 3 | Dong Van → Ma Pi Leng → Meo Vac → Du Gia | ~90km | Du Gia |
| 4 | Du Gia → Ha Giang City | ~70km | — |
Day two is the one that earns the extra night. Lung Cu Flag Tower, the Hmong King’s Palace at Sa Phin and Sung La valley all fit, and none of them fit on a three-day trip.
The cost is one more night of accommodation, one more day of guide and bike hire, and a later bus. Roughly $35 to $50 all in on a guided tour.
For that money you stop riding to a clock. On this route that is worth more than it sounds.

The 5-day Ha Giang Loop itinerary, and who it is actually for
Five days adds a second night on the plateau, usually in Meo Vac, and a slower southern section.
It suits three kinds of traveller. Photographers who want Ma Pi Leng at both ends of a day. Riders who want the Xin Man or Hoang Su Phi extension. And anyone who arrived sick, tired or nervous on a bike.
It does not suit people who like moving. Two of the five days involve under three hours of riding, and the plateau towns are small.
Book five days if you have a specific reason. Book four if you do not.
The two-day trip is not a Ha Giang Loop itinerary
Two-day packages exist and they sell well. They are not the loop.
What you get is Ha Giang City to Dong Van, over Ma Pi Leng to Meo Vac, then straight back on the main road. The southern section through Du Gia is dropped entirely.
That is a fair trip if you have two days. Just book it knowing you are seeing about two thirds of the route, and that the third you miss is the quiet one.
Build the Ha Giang Loop itinerary around your bus
This is the scheduling mistake that costs people a day, and it happens before the riding starts.
The night bus from Hanoi arrives in Ha Giang City between 4am and 6am. Tours leave at 8.30am. That gap is designed, and it means you can ride on your arrival morning.
Take a day bus instead and you lose the morning, sleep in Ha Giang City, and start the following day. Options and timings are in the Hanoi to Ha Giang guide.
On the way out, the last day finishes early afternoon. The evening sleeper back to Hanoi is the standard move, and it saves a night of accommodation.

What to cut when the Ha Giang Loop itinerary slips
It will slip. Rain, a puncture, a slow group, a road crew with a digger across the carriageway.
Cut in this order:
- Lung Cu Flag Tower first. It is a 24km detour each way for a flagpole, and the ride out is the good part.
- Du Gia waterfall second, unless it is hot and you are staying the night.
- Pho Bang and Sung La third. Both are lovely and both are short.
- The Nho Que boat last. Give up almost anything else before this one.
Never cut riding time to make a stop. Arriving on the Meo Vac to Du Gia leg after dark is the one genuinely dangerous thing on the route.
Booking the itinerary, and what a package covers
Almost every itinerary above is sold as a package: bike, guide, fuel, homestays, meals and the border permit. Prices run about $128 to $180 for three days.
Vietnam’s tourism board publishes its own four-day version of the route, which is a useful cross-check on any operator’s day plan.
What the three formats include, and where the prices actually differ, is set out in the tour comparison. If you are still deciding whether to ride yourself, start with easy rider versus self-drive.
Everything else about the route, the permit and the costs sits in the main Ha Giang Loop guide. How to choose between operators is in the tour companies comparison.
