The Sapa 2-Day Trek with Homestay: What It’s Really Like

The Sapa 2-day trek is the one thing most visitors here should book. If you do exactly one organized thing in Sapa, make it this. Two days on the valley trails. One night at a village homestay. It is the centerpiece of the trip for almost everyone who does it.

The Sapa 2-Day Trek with Homestay, Hour by Hour
Here is the full experience, hour by honest hour.

The Shape of the Trek
A 2-day trek from Sapa follows one standard format. This is the classic Muong Hoa valley trek.
- Day 1: Sapa to Y Linh Ho, Lao Chai and Ta Van. About 12km over 5 to 6 hours. Overnight at a homestay.
- Day 2: Ta Van to the Giang Ta Chai waterfall and Su Pan. About 8km over 3 to 4 hours. A vehicle brings you back by mid-afternoon.
- Cost: $45 to $65 in a group. $80 to $110 private. Guide, lunches, dinner, homestay and breakfast are included.
- Fitness: moderate. You need to walk five hours on uneven, sometimes muddy ground.

Day 1: Into the Valley
9am. Meet your guide. She is very likely a Black Hmong woman from this valley. Her English was learned entirely on these trails.
9:30am to 1pm. Descend from the rim into the terraces. This stretch through Y Linh Ho and into Lao Chai is the greatest hits reel. Buffalo, terrace walls, the valley unrolling below. Your guide takes field paths that self-guided walkers never find.
1pm. Lunch at a family spot in Lao Chai. Fried noodles, spring rolls, and a beer if you have earned it.
2:30pm to 4:30pm. The gentler leg to Ta Van follows the stream. Rock carvings if you ask. Hemp and indigo talk. The pace eases as the light turns gold.
5pm. The homestay. Hot shower first. Then the valley’s best hour: golden light, evening chores, and the paths behind the village all yours.
7pm. Dinner. A dozen dishes, the family, other trekkers, and rice wine diplomacy. The homestay guide covers the etiquette. The short version is say yes to the first toast.
Day 2: Where the Crowds Are Not

6:30am. Fog on the fields, pancakes or pho, and the valley at its most beautiful. This dawn is what the overnight buys you.
8:30am to 12:30pm. The trail past Ta Van changes character. A suspension bridge crosses the Muong Hoa. Then comes the Giang Ta Chai waterfall, bamboo forest, and Red Dao hamlets. Day-trippers simply do not reach here. Fewer people, rougher path, better silence.
1pm. Lunch, then the van back up to Sapa town by 3pm. That leaves time for a herbal bath and a salmon hotpot. Or the afternoon bus to Hanoi.
Group or Private?
The calculus matches all Sapa treks. Groups of 8 to 12 are cheap and sociable. Private guides set your pace and bend the route. They also double the cultural depth. That costs roughly $20 more per person per day. Couples and photographers should go private.
What to Bring on the Sapa 2-Day Trek
- Day pack only. Take 20L with overnight basics. Your main luggage stays at the town hotel.
- The trek essentials. Grippy shoes, rain shell, a warm evening layer, cash and a power bank. The full packing list applies, minus the suitcase.
- Insurance that covers the walking. A two-day trek with an overnight is exactly what the exclusion clauses are written for. EKTA needs the active-leisure option named on the contract.
- Leave behind. Laptops, jewelry, and any expectation of privacy at dinner.
Before you buy that policy. EKTA is underwritten by IC "Auras Insurance" LLC, licence L16330/AI, in Mutsamudu on the autonomous island of Anjouan, Union of Comoros, regulated by the Anjouan Offshore Finance Authority — Clause 1.3 of the policy wording. A fact, not an accusation, but if you are American, British or Australian a disputed claim is not going to your home regulator. HeyMondo covers trekking below 3,000m on its base policy and answers to a Spanish regulator. We earn a commission on EKTA and nothing on HeyMondo — here is how this site makes money.
