Where to Stay on the Ha Giang Loop: Dong Van, Meo Vac or Du Gia

Where to Stay on the Ha Giang Loop Dong Van, Meo Vac or Du Gia

Where to stay Ha Giang Loop is a question with a misleading shape. You do not choose a town and stay in it. You choose which towns you sleep in on the way round.

There are four realistic overnight stops: Yen Minh, Dong Van, Meo Vac and Du Gia. Which two or three you get depends on how many days you ride.

Each one buys you a different next morning, and that is the part worth choosing deliberately.

Where to stay Ha Giang Loop comes down to what each town gives you after the riding stops.

Where to stay Ha Giang Loop: the four towns

TownEveningWhat the next morning buys you
Yen MinhFunctional. A main street and pine forest.A shorter day two. Little else.
Dong VanBest of the four. Old quarter, cafes, food after 8pm.Ma Pi Leng first thing, in good light.
Meo VacQuiet, small, few places to eat.Ma Pi Leng at first light, empty, if you ride back west.
Du GiaQuietest. A waterfall, a handful of homestays.A short last day back to Ha Giang City.

All four sit inside the Dong Van Karst Plateau geopark. Distances between them, and the riding time for each leg, are in the Ha Giang Loop map.

Where to stay Ha Giang Loop in three days

Two nights, and operators split on the first one.

Night one in Dong Van is the better version. It means a long first day, arriving around 5pm. But it puts Ma Pi Leng at the start of day two rather than the middle.

Night one in Yen Minh gives you an easier first day and a slow evening. It also pushes the pass later, into flatter light, and lengthens day two.

Night two is Du Gia either way. Ask which one your operator uses before booking, because it is rarely on the listing and it changes the trip.

Where to stay Ha Giang Loop in four days

Three nights. The standard split is Yen Minh, Dong Van, Du Gia, and it is the version worth booking.

You get an unhurried first day. Then a full morning on the plateau, with Lung Cu and the Hmong King’s Palace. Ma Pi Leng comes fresh on day three.

The photographer’s variant swaps Yen Minh for a second plateau night: Dong Van, then Meo Vac, then Du Gia. Day-by-day timings for both are in the itinerary guide.

Du Gia is the quietest of the four and the one most riders name afterwards.

Meo Vac is the underrated night

Meo Vac sits at the eastern end of Ma Pi Leng. That makes it the only town you can ride the pass from at dawn.

Almost nobody does this. Groups sleep in Dong Van and cross west to east mid-morning with everyone else.

Sleep in Meo Vac and ride back west at first light. You get the same road with no traffic, and cloud still in the gorge. Then carry on south to Du Gia.

The cost is a duller evening. Meo Vac has a market and not much else after dark, and the food choice is thin.

Worth it if you are here for Ma Pi Leng Pass specifically. Not worth it otherwise.

Du Gia, and why it ends up in every itinerary

Du Gia is reached over the roughest surfaces on the route. That is exactly why it is quiet.

A handful of homestays, a waterfall you can swim in, almost no through traffic. It is the night people describe when they get home.

It also sits at the right distance for a short final day. That is the practical reason operators use it, rather than the romantic one.

If your three-day tour skips Du Gia and returns on the main road, you are on a shortened loop. That is a fair trip, but it is not the full route.

What you actually book, and what you do not

On a guided tour you book nothing on the loop. The operator has fixed contracts with homestays in each town and you sleep where they say.

You can ask for a private room instead of a dorm mattress. It costs $8 to $20 more a night, and is not always available.

Riding independently you book as you go, or an hour ahead by phone. Beds are rarely a problem outside October, November and Tet.

The one night you should book yourself is the one before you start, in Ha Giang City. What to look for there is in the Ha Giang hostels guide. Getting there is in the Hanoi to Ha Giang guide.

Where to stay in Ha Giang City itself

Different question, different answer. Ha Giang City is a staging post rather than a destination. Most riders spend one night there, or none at all.

The night bus from Hanoi lands between 4am and 6am. Tours leave at 8.30am. You can ride on your arrival morning without booking a bed.

If you do stay, hostels run $8 to $15 and hotels $20 to $45. Vietnam’s tourism board sets out the standard four-day version of the route. Use it to sanity-check an operator’s overnight plan.

Everything else about the route, the permit and the costs is in the main Ha Giang Loop guide.

Where to Stay Ha Giang Loop FAQ

Where to stay Ha Giang Loop on a three-day tour?

Two nights. Usually Dong Van or Yen Minh first, Du Gia second. Dong Van is the better first night, because it puts Ma Pi Leng at the start of day two.

Which is the best town to sleep in on the Ha Giang Loop?

Dong Van. It has the old quarter, the food and the position before Ma Pi Leng. Du Gia is the one people remember, and Meo Vac is best if you want the pass at dawn.

Do I need to book homestays on the loop?

Not on a guided tour. The operator has fixed contracts and chooses for you. Riding independently you can book an hour ahead, except in October, November and around Tet.

Can I get a private room on the Ha Giang Loop?

Sometimes, for $8 to $20 more a night. Ask when you book rather than on the day, because plenty of homestays have none at all.

Is Meo Vac worth staying in?

Only if you want Ma Pi Leng at first light. That is a genuinely good reason. The evening is quiet and the food choice is thin compared with Dong Van.

Should I stay in Ha Giang City before the loop?

Not necessarily. The night bus arrives between 4am and 6am and tours leave at 8.30am, so you can ride on your arrival morning and save a night.

Overnight patterns reflect what operators were running in September 2026. Which towns a package uses changes between operators and seasons, so ask rather than assume.
