Best Ha Giang Hostels & Homestays for Riders

Most guides treat Ha Giang hostels as a place to sleep before the ride. On this route they are something else, and it changes how you choose one.

In Ha Giang City the hostel is usually the tour operator. The bed and the trip are sold by the same business, often at the same desk.

So booking a bed can quietly commit you to a tour. Here is how the accommodation actually works, in town and on the loop.

Ha Giang hostels are tour operators with beds attached

This is the single most useful thing to know before booking.

The economics are simple. A dorm bed earns a few dollars. A three-day tour earns well over a hundred. The bed exists to fill the tour.

None of that is sinister, and the good ones run excellent trips. But it means two things in practice.

• You will be sold a tour at check-in, sometimes before you have put your bag down.
• Reviews of the hostel are often really reviews of the tour, which makes them hard to read for the thing you are booking.

You can book the bed and decline the tour. Say so early and pleasantly, and it is fine.

Hostel, homestay or hotel: three different things

Nearly everyone uses the first two. A hotel makes sense if you are arriving late, travelling as a couple, or you simply want to sleep.

A Ha Giang homestay on the route is not a booking decision at all on a guided trip. Your operator has already chosen it.

What a loop homestay is actually like

Expect a wooden or concrete family house with one large upstairs room. Mattresses on the floor, mosquito nets, blankets, a shared bathroom downstairs.

Dinner is served at a long table and everyone eats the same food. Rice wine appears. Someone will make a toast in a language you do not speak.

Two practical warnings. It gets genuinely cold on the plateau from November to February, and hot water is a shared resource that runs out.

This is the part of the trip people remember, and it is the part the brochure photographs least well.

Dorm or private room

In town, a private room costs $8 to $20 more than a dorm bed. On the loop, a private room is sometimes available for a similar premium and sometimes not available at all.

Take the dorm on the loop. The group you ride with is the group you eat with, and the shared room is most of why the trip feels like something.

Take the private room in town on the night before, if you are arriving off a night bus and want four proper hours.

How to choose between Ha Giang hostels

Six things that actually differ, in rough order of how much they matter:

1. Free luggage storage while you ride. Almost all offer it. Confirm it, because carrying a suitcase on the loop is not possible.
2. Position relative to the bus drop. Arriving at 5am, a ten-minute walk and a two-kilometre walk are very different things.
3. Early check-in, or a shower before the tour leaves. The night bus lands hours before the 8.30am departure.
4. Whether they run their own tours or resell. Both are fine. Not saying which is the flag.
5. Hot water and heating. November to February this matters more than the price.
6. Whether the bar runs late. Which you may want, or may very much not, the night before a mountain road.

Note what is not on that list: the photographs. Every hostel here has the same rooftop shot and they all look alike for a reason.

The same reasoning as the tour companies applies, and more strongly. Ownership changes, staff move, and a property that ran tight trips last season may be reselling this one.

A named ranking would be out of date before the next harvest. The six checks above will not be.

Booking, and the nights either side

Book the night before the loop, and think about the night after.

The trip ends early afternoon on the last day. Most riders shower at the hostel, which is usually free even without a booking, and take the evening bus. That saves a night.
